Before you book in for a procedure, take a moment to confirm exactly what your policy includes, you can find this in your fact sheet in the member area or app. This can help you avoid unexpected costs later.

Here’s what to check:

Is the procedure included on my cover?

Not all treatments are included in every level of cover. Make sure the procedure you need is listed under your policy benefits (you can find this info in your fact sheet in the member area). Even if something is covered, there may be restrictions or exclusions on certain services.

Have I served waiting periods?

Some services can only be claimed after a set period of time:

  • General waiting periods usually apply
  • A 12month waiting period applies to pre-existing conditions, meaning anything you showed signs or symptoms of before joining or upgrading your cover

What isn’t covered by my hospital policy?
You’ll only get hospital benefits for services your policy actually covers, and only after you’ve served any waiting periods.

Hospital benefits only apply if you’re admitted to hospital as a private patient. This basically means anything outside your hospital stay isn’t covered.

So, things like:

  • Emergency department visits
  • Tests done before or after your admission
  • Specialist appointments

are not covered by your hospital cover, and you may have to pay for yourself.

Where do I find details on my policy?

You can check everything in your policy fact sheet, available in your member area or the mobile app. This is the quickest way to see what’s included, restricted, or excluded. Or you can contact Frank if you’d rather chat with someone.

Why does this matter?

Understanding your cover upfront helps you:

  • Avoid surprise out-of-pocket costs
  • Plan your treatment timeline (especially if waiting periods apply)
  • Ask better questions when speaking with your doctor or specialist

If you’re unsure about anything, it’s worth contacting Frank, our team can help confirm what you’re covered for before you go ahead.

Ask your specialist for any Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) item numbers as this helps our team provide the most accurate information.
