What should I do before going to hospital?

A little preparation can make things easier on the day.

Before your stay, make sure you:

  • Choose the right specialist and hospital for your needs
  • Understand your cover – what’s included, what’s not, and any restrictions or exclusions
  • Ask questions about your procedure and any out-of-pocket costs, including any MBS item numbers that will be used to bill for your procedure
  • Complete your Informed Financial Consent form
  • Know your admission date and what to bring on the day

Pre-admission

Before a planned admission, the hospital will tell you:

  • When to arrive
  • How to prepare
  • What to bring
  • Any expected costs
  • Whether you’ll need to organise a lift home

Your care team will be there to support you. If you have questions about your treatment, speak with your nurse. For anything else, you can ask to speak with a patient liaison officer.

Staying in hospital

Your care team will look after you throughout your stay, so don’t hesitate to ask questions or raise any concerns while you’re there.

Rehab and recovery

Before you leave, your specialist will give you recovery instructions and let you know who to contact if you need help.

It’s a good idea to ask questions before you leave, like:

  • Do I need to make any follow-up appointments with my doctor or specialist?
  • Do I need any follow-up therapy?
  • When can I drive, work and return to normal activities?
  • Can I get a medical certificate for my workplace?
  • Who do I contact if I am concerned about my recovery?

Your specialist may encourage physical therapy or other forms of rehab after your procedure. Following this advice can help support your recovery.

Eligible Frank members with hospital cover may be able to access additional health support programs such as Hospital in the Home, or Rehab in the Home. To check your eligibility, ask your specialist or provider if you are eligible.

Some benefits for services such as physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, and remedial massage are covered under Frank extras policies. You can check your extras cover annual limits to see if you’re covered for benefits towards these services. Telehealth services are also available to eligible Frank members.

What do I do if something doesn’t seem right with my recovery?

If something doesn’t feel right during your recovery, such as increasing pain, fever, unexpected bleeding, worsening symptoms, or anything that concerns you, contact the healthcare team listed in your discharge instructions straight away. This is usually your specialist’s rooms, your hospital’s postoperative care line, or your GP.

If your symptoms are severe or urgent, go to your nearest emergency department or call 000.

It’s always best to seek help early. If you need to return to hospital, your team will be there to support you. Bringing your discharge paperwork and a list of your medications can help your team support you quickly.
