Step 4 - Right specialist for you

If your GP has determined it may be time for further investigation that may result in a hospital visit or surgery, there’s some things you can ask before deciding which specialist is right for you. Your doctor will provide you with a referral letter which outlines your relevant medical background.

Find a specialist

Most people find their specialist through a recommendation from their GP or family and friend’s. Your GP can offer advice and may offer considerations based on your specific needs. Like many services, you can ring around specialists and find out costs and availability. Even if your GP addresses your referral letter to a specific doctor, you can still use the same referral for all specialists in that field. 

It’s common to have an initial consult to meet the specialist and understand your needs before they can provide you with a quote or further advice. Learn more about costs and hospitalisation.
