New financial year health insurance checklist
Thinking of joining Frank to avoid the MLS?
Is it too late to avoid MLS this financial year?
If you're a high-income earner and don't have hospital cover, you'll have to pay MLS for any days you weren't covered by eligible hospital insurance. Joining before 30 June (2027) may reduce what you owe, but it won't remove MLS already accrued.
Why does 30 June matter?
30 June is the end of the financial year. If you don’t hold eligible hospital cover as a high-income earner, you'll be up to pay the MLS if your income is above the MLS threshold that’s $105K for singles and $210K for couples and families this financial year (2026-27).
If you’ve recently turned 31, 30 June is also a key deadline for Lifetime Health Cover (LHC). If you don't have eligible hospital cover by 1 July following your 31st birthday, LHC loading will apply if you do decide to take it out later. This is an additional 2% on your hospital premiums for each year you’ve been without cover after this date. LHC loading is capped at 70% and remains for ten continuous years before it is removed.

How much MLS will joining Frank before 30 June actually save?
