How to switch to Frank

Frank makes switching from your old health insurer easy. 

Here’s how it works.

  1. Get a quote from this website.
  2. When you've chosen a cover, sign up with Frank online. When prompted, input the information about your old health fund.
  3. After you've joined, Frank will get in touch with your old fund and arrange the transfer. So you can sit back and relax, knowing that Frank's got you covered.

What happens next

When you sign up online and tell Frank that you are transferring from another health fund, you're agreeing to let us contact your old fund to request that they cancel your previous cover and send us a transfer certificate.

Some funds allow us to request a transfer certificate after receiving this electronic agreement from you, while others require us to have your signature before making this request. Within 48 hours of joining Frank you will receive a welcome message in your member area to let you know if we need you to sign a form to complete this request.

Once your previous insurer receives the request to transfer your membership to Frank they must process it within 14 days, issue a transfer certificate to Frank or to you and pay a refund of premiums that you have paid ahead to you provided you have not made any claims.

A transfer certificate is like your health insurance passport. It contains the information Frank needs to make sure you are paying the correct premiums, waiting the right amount of time before you claim and claiming the correct amount.

Waiting periods when transferring from another fund

You can transfer your health insurance from another health insurer to Frank without serving any new waiting periods or benefit limitation periods provided that you:

  • have served all waiting periods or benefit limitation periods with your previous health insurer; and
  • transfer to any equivalent or lower level of cover within 30 days of your membership ceasing with your previous health insurer.

Frank recommends that your cover starts immediately after your previous cover ends. If your new cover with Frank provides higher benefits services not covered by your previous health insurer, you’ll have to serve Frank's waiting periods before you can claim these at the new (higher) level. In the meantime, Frank will still pay the same that you would have got back from your old insurer, so you don't miss out.

If you transfer to Frank from another health insurer before completing the waiting periods or benefit limitation periods with your previous health insurer, you’ll need to serve the balance of the waiting periods or benefit limitation periods with Frank.

When you transfer to Frank your benefit entitlements may be adjusted by benefits already paid by your previous health insurer. Under lifetime health cover, continuity of a member’s/partner’s certified age at entry (CAE) is possible when transferring from another Australian registered private health insurer.
