When choosing private health insurance, it is important that you understand the policies, restrictions and most importantly the specifics of the coverage. You must understand that even though you have a private health insurance policy you are only covered for the products and services outlined by the insurer. The main reason for opting for private health insurance is for peace of mind and to make sure you optimise your cheap extras cover in return for paying your premiums.

If one of the your priorities when joining a private health insurance policy is for you to receive extras cover for your optical needs, then you must choose a private health insurance policy which includes cheap extras cover rather than simply getting hospital cover. Through doing this you can access generous rebates on frames and contact lenses across Australia. If you hold extras cover then you will have benefits paid on items carried out by a registered optometrist or optical provider approved by your health insurance company. Benefits are not paid on non-prescription safety glasses, protective glasses, tinting glasses, cosmetic glasses or cosmetic contact lenses or frames purchased via a registered Australian optical provider. Frank Health Insurance offers cheap health insurance policies which will cover all your optical needs.

Why do I need optical cover?

Medicare covers the cost of eye tests with a qualified optometrist, and they will let you know if you have any vision impairment. If you need assistance with your vision, then having private health insurance with optical will help pay for the cost of your glasses or contact lenses. If you are starting to get older, it is important to have regular eye examinations, because the likelihood of developing a serious eye condition increases. These conditions which include; glaucoma, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration which can lead to blindness if left untreated. In many of these conditions, symptoms do not begin to appear until it is too late, so early intervention is crucial. If you need surgery for cataracts or other eye lens procedures, then you need to take out hospital cover, as optical benefits under extras pays benefits only for items that con improve your vision.

Will I be able to claim for my glasses or contact lenses with my cheap extras cover?

Most health funds will pay towards your prescription glasses or contact lenses purchased according to your level of cover. Some health funds unfortunately do not recognise online optical stores so it is recommended that before you purchase a pair of glasses online you check with your health fund to confirm that you are covered for online purchases and also to find out exactly how much they will pay. When making your claim simply use your health fund membership card to claim your benefits on the spot, when you are paying for your glasses or contact lenses. The optometrist will receive your benefits directly from the health fund, ad all you need to do is pay the difference.

Waiting periods

Like other cheap extras cover features, you must be covered for optical under your health insurance plan if you wish to claim benefits for treatment. If you are required to serve waiting periods, they must be completed before your claim is valid. Usually, optical only has a two month wait, which may be waived in the form of a special offer from the health fund, or if you switch from another health cover that also included optical benefits.

At Frank Health Insurance we offer cheap extras cover policies which will cover all your optical needs. Make sure you log on to our website today to check out the latest deals.
