What Health Insurance Element covers braces?

It’s critical to understand that Frank, like all funds offer two health insurance components. The first is hospital cover which covers sickness or injury issues that may require hospitalisation. The second is extras cover which covers you for regular health services you may require from seeing a dentist to getting new prescription glasses.

The extras component is what will provide cover for when you require braces and other orthodontic work to get that perfect smile.

Does Frank Cheapest Health Insurance cover braces?

The short answer is yes. If you get Frank’s cheapest extras cover called some extras you are entitled to get between 50% to 80% up to a set annual limit. If you’re looking to increase the amount you can claim, you may also want to consider lots extra.

Generally, it’s recommended that if you can plan ahead with your orthodontic work. A smart move can be to visit an orthodontist prior to getting any work done for a consultation. This will allow them to discuss what work may be required and the relevant costs associated with them. Based on this information, you can plan ahead with what level of cover will provide you with the best value.

What information do I need to ask my dentist or orthodontist for?

Never rush into an orthodontic treatment. It’s always recommended you ask the following questions and then have a chat with a Frank consultant to understand what you are covered for. The types of questions you should ask and note down include:

  1. What type of treatment am I getting?
  2. Total cost of treatment
  3. Expected length of active treatment
  4. Item numbers that will apply.
  5. Your dentist or orthodontist’s provider number.

Make sure you understand that waiting periods apply

It’s standard for major dental work including orthodontics to have waiting periods. This prevents individuals and families from purchasing cheap health insurance, making a claim and then ditching their policy.

The waiting period for Orthodontics is 12 months. This means that you need to plan at least 12 months ahead to make sure you have the right extras policy for the planned treatment. Of course, if you already have extras cover with Frank or even if you switched to Frank and already had extras policy you may already have finished this waiting period.

How Do Limits For Orthodontics Work?

All extras policies have annual limits when it comes to major dental including Orthodontics. Frank’s annual limits work by calendar years (January – December) and reset on the 1st of January each year.

If you pay for your Orthodontics up front or pay a large lump sum during the course of your Orthodontic treatment, you can continue to claim for Orthodontics in the following years; as long as you are still undergoing active Orthodontic treatment (this means you still have braces on).

Three Key Takeaways

  1. The extras component of health insurance provides dental cover which may include braces.
  2. All of Frank’s extras cover provides braces cover. The amount you will get back from treatments and annual limits depends on the level of cover you choose. Therefore, a cheap health insurance policy will provide you with less cover leaving you more out-of-pocket for orthodontic work.
  3. Plan ahead when it comes to braces work. Understand what braces and other orthodontic work may be required and get the relevant details in writing along with projected costs. Make sure you have served the 12 months waiting period to ensure you can make claims once you commence work.
