Waiting periods
If you’ve never had health insurance the waiting periods above will apply to you. After they’ve passed, you can claim for any future treatment you receive. Eg. If your waiting period finishes on July 13th, you can claim on treatment you receive from July 14th onwards.
If you’re already with Frank or another health insurer, your waiting periods may be less. It depends on what treatments you were covered for and how much of the waiting periods you have already served. See Product Detail for the specifics.
Want to know more? See Product Detail for all the particulars.

Want to go to Spiro the Chiro and Phil the Physio on the same day?
You can with Frank. You can claim for more than one service on the same day if performed by different providers.
Dental Notes
Dental is complicated. There are over 1000 different treatments and even more rules about what is and isn’t covered. Rather than bore you with all the details here, Frank recommends you get in touch before getting treatment. That way you’ll know if you’re covered.
Sub-limits
The table above shows the yearly limit for each type of dental service. For example, the annual limit for crown and bridgework is $600. However, there are further sub-limits for each of these services. For example, the individual limit for one crown is $300.
If you’re getting treatment, email or chat to Frank first to see if any sub-limits apply to you.

Extras Waiting Periods
Waiting periods are a necessary evil. Without them, people would join Frank just because they need treatment. And Frank thinks that’s cheating.
The standard waiting periods for Frank Extras are:
- 12 months - major dental (this includes root canals)
- 12 months - foot orthotics
- 12 months - podiatry surgery
- 6 months - optical
- 2 months - all other services
Transferring from another health insurer or Frank cover?
For treatment that wasn’t covered by your old cover
You’ll need to wait the standard waiting periods listed above.
For treatment that was covered by your old cover (see Note)
If you’ve already completed the waiting periods for that treatment, you’ll be covered from day one of your new cover.
Otherwise, you’ll have to wait the remainder of any waiting period for that benefit.
E.g. If you have done 9 months of a 12 month waiting period with your old cover, you’ll have to wait 3 months with your new cover.
Note
If your new Frank cover has higher rebate limits than your old cover, you’ll have to serve the standard waiting periods to receive those higher limits. You’ll be covered at your old (lower) limits during that time though.
Adding another person to your membership?
The new person will have to wait the standard waiting periods listed above.
Unless:
- They are your newborn baby
- They are your adopted or permanent foster child
- They have already served the waiting periods with Frank or another fund (at an equal or higher limit level)
In these cases, Frank will fully cover the new person from day one.
Back to top of page
Extras Exclusions
Even Frank has limits. Here are some of them.
- Frank won’t pay for natural remedies (including Modifast and Optifast).
- Frank doesn’t cover food supplements.
- Frank will only pay for dental work done by advanced dental technicians. So if you are worked on and charged by a dental mechanic, Frank won’t pay. Not sure who is who? Check with your provider.
- There are some dental procedures that Frank won’t cover if they’re given on the same day. E.g. if your bill says you had one tooth filled and then removed, Frank won’t pay for the filling. It’s complicated, so call Frank direct to see what is and isn’t covered.
- There are limits to the number of times you can get some dental procedures done. If you go over these limits, Frank won’t pay.
- If your dentist doesn’t supply tooth IDs, Frank won’t cover the treatment.
- Frank will only pay for 1 consultation and/or treatment per provider per day.
- Frank won’t pay for dental treatment that isn’t done in person. For example, if your dentist charges you for advice given over the phone.
- If you get foot orthotics from a physiotherapist or chiropractor, Frank won’t cover them.
- Frank won’t pay for lifestyle choices that take the form of sport, recreation or entertainment. Things like running shoes, gym memberships and anything else not directly related to your health.
- You can’t make a profit out of your insurance. So Frank won’t pay more than you were charged for a treatment. And if you’re claiming the same treatment from someone else too, it will affect how much Frank gives you.
- You’re not covered for any treatment you have overseas. But Frank hopes you have a nice trip.
- Frank won’t pay for Extras services bought over the Internet, unless Frank tells you otherwise.
- If you can claim damages or compensation from someone else, you can’t claim it from Frank.
- You can’t claim on treatment you can get free from the government.
- You can’t claim on treatment you had over 1 year ago.
- You can’t claim on stuff that isn’t covered by your membership. Pretty obvious, really.
- If you’re not paying Frank, Frank won’t pay you. So if you suspend your membership or don’t pay your fees, you can’t claim on treatment you get during that time.
- Whoever treats you needs to be actually working in a private practice or for an organisation recognised by Frank. If not, Frank won’t cover the claim.
- If you hire equipment (like crutches) Frank won’t pay for it. Unless Frank tells you otherwise.
- If you’re related to the person who treated you, or in the same family, you can’t claim for that treatment. The same goes if you and your provider are business partners. Or if you’re in the business partner’s family.
When Frank says ‘family’ Frank means wife, husband, unmarried partner, sibling, kids, parents, grandparents, grandkids, cousins, nephews, nieces... If you’re unsure, check with Frank.
